How to Keep Dogs off Your Cabinets

Many dogs begin jumping as puppies. While better to train them not to jump on anyone or anything as young pups, it is never too late to teach your dog proper manners. Dogs may jump on the cabinets because they smell food or they want to be close to you while you're in the kitchen. This can be a disturbing habit, especially if your dog is scratching at your cabinets and causing damage. With a few training techniques, you can safely and gently curb this bad habit in your dog and bring peace back to your kitchen.

Put a leash on your dog while he is in the kitchen. If your dog tends to jump on the cabinets when you're in the room with him, then remain in the room. When he jumps on the cabinets, grab the leash and give it a jerk while saying "no." If your dog is shy, use a gentle voice; keep your tone firm if your dog is stubborn. Command your dog to sit, give him a small biscuit for complying and praise him. Repeat this each time he jumps up.

Step on his leash. This allows your dog more freedom to move. She will begin to jump and the leash will correct her. Tell her "off" in a suitable tone to match her temperament. Tell her to sit and lavish her with a biscuit and praise. She will soon learn that jumping leads to discomfort while sitting leads to praise and affection.

Hold your dog's paws when he jumps on your cabinets. As soon as he jumps up, take a firm grasp of his paws and hold them until he becomes uncomfortable. When he begins to struggle, let go and tell him "off." Praise him when he sits.

Use a gate to keep her out of the kitchen and off your cabinets. If your dog is doing extensive damage to your cabinets, it may be best to keep her out of your kitchen while you are curbing her habit. If you have difficulty curbing it on your own, consider formal dog training.
