How to Make a Puppy Stop Leading With His Mouth

You might think it's cute now, when your puppy bites on his leash and tries to lead you where he wants to go, but when he's fully grown and uncontrollable it will be anything but adorable. Part of being a responsible dog owner is training your dog to walk on a leash and obey commands. Allowing your puppy to take control of the leash sends a message to the puppy that he is the leader of the pack. To raise an obedient dog, train your puppy not to use his mouth to lead.

Instructions

    • 1

Speak to your puppy each time he starts to bite the leash. Use a loud, clear command such as "no" or drop it!" Reward the puppy when he obeys by praising him and giving him a small treat.

    • 2

Provide your puppy with a toy or a stick he can carry while walking. If his mouth is already occupied with something, he will not be able to bite on the leash.

    • 3

Step on the leash and stop walking each time the puppy tries to lead with his mouth. Resume your walk when he lets go of the leash.

    • 4

Use a metal leash rather than a nylon or leather leash. When puppies learn that it is difficult or painful to bite the metal links, they will be far less likely to try to lead.

    • 5

Treat the leash with an unpleasant tasting, yet safe, substance such as bitter apple spray. The disagreeable taste will deter your puppy from biting the leash.
