Instructions
Shout "Get back!" as loudly as you can while pointing a finger directly at the dog. Shout "Go home!" or "Bad dog!" Continue shouting and pointing your finger directly at the dog's face. Wave your hands and continue shouting those words until the dog looks up at you. If you can make eye contact, the dog will immediately back away.
Clap your hands hard, with authority, while shouting "Get back!," "Bad dog!" and "Go home!"
Whistle using any means you can. Use two fingers to whistle in the loudest, shrillest whistle that you can muster. When the dog looks up, shout at him and clap your hands.
Kick the dirt or gravel with your feet. This makes more noise than you might think and scatters small rocks and gravel, also getting the dog's attention. Continue whistling, shouting and clapping until the dog looks you in the face.
Bounce a bicycle. Bikes will rattle. If you are on a bicycle, get off the bike on the opposite side from the dog. Bounce the bike up and down in front of the dog. The rattling sound from the bike will get his attention. When he looks at you, point at him and shout, "Go home!" or "Bad dog!" If the bike has whistles or bells, use those to make noise.
Clap your hands in the dog's face if he is close enough.
How to Make Sounds to Get a Dog's Attention
Getting a dog's attention can be extremely important if the dog is preoccupied. This can happen when a dog is in a frenzy of excitement or anger. Cyclists often trigger a dog's fight emotions, resulting in the dog attacking the cyclist in a blind fury. Cyclists know that if you can get the dog's attention, you have a better chance of avoiding a direct attack. There are several ways to get his attention, mostly involving loud noises that you can make yourself.
