The Difference between the Dogtra 1900NCP and 280NCP

The Dogtra 1900NCP Field Star and the Dogtra 280NCP Platinum are remote-controlled electronic dog training collars from California-based e-collar manufacturer Dogtra Company. Each product consists of the collar, or strap; a receiver and a transmitter. The 1900NCP Field Star is designed and marketed as Dogtra's top-level e-collar. The 280NCP has the same features, but its power range is less so it is slightly less versatile in its range of uses. The 280NCP has a smaller collar and can be used on a somewhat smaller dog.
  1. Power Differences

    • Running on rechargeable nickel-metal hydride batteries, the Dogtra 1900NCP Field Star and the Dogtra 280NCP Platinum both offer 127 stimulation levels. The selected stimulation is displayed on a blue LED screen. Each e-collar offers a maximum range of half a mile. The 1900NCP has a low-to-high power range, thus giving it a range of use that includes very high-drive dogs. The 280NCP, with its low-to-medium power range, is well suited for softer dogs that would never require and should not receive the higher stimulation range.

    NCP

    • Both collars are designated NCP, which means both offer "Nick," "Continuous" and "Pager" stimulations. Set to "Nick," the collars give the dog only a momentary shock stimulation when the trainer pushes a button on the transmitter. Set to "Continuous," the stimulation continues as long as the button is depressed, up to a limit of 12 seconds. Set to "Pager," the collar gives no shock. Instead, it vibrates mechanically, like a pager.

    Packaging

    • In addition to the collar, receiver and transmitter -- all of which are waterproof -- the Dogtra 1900NCP Field Star and the Dogtra 280NCP Platinum come with an owner's manual, battery charger and splitter cable. Dogtra adds a test light and carrying case to the packaging of the 1900NCP.

    Pricing

    • At the time of publication, the Dogtra 1900NCP Field Star cost $20 more than the Dogtra 280NCP Platinum. The 1900NCP has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $250. The 280NCP's MSRP is $230.
