How to Stop a Dog From Eating Toilet Paper

The image of a playful puppy happily frolicking with toilet paper has been illustrated in television commercials, magazine photos -- even billboards. While the image may be appealing, chewing and eating paper of any kind can be harmful and even deadly to dogs. If your dog is enamored with paper, there are a few simple steps that will help to correct this potentially dangerous behavior.

Things You'll Need

  • Veterinarian-approved chew toys or edible chew treats

Instructions

    • 1

Place toilet and other paper products out of your dog's reach in each room of the house, as well as porches, patios and yards.

    • 2

Say the word "no" in a firm, but gentle voice if the dog begins to tear or eat paper.

    • 3

Place your dog by itself in another room for 10 minutes after issuing the "no" voice command.

    • 4

Remove the paper product and allow your dog to rejoin you.

    • 5

Provide your dog with a veterinarian-approved chew toy or edible chew treat. When your dog begins to play with the appropriate toy or treat, give praise and encourage it to continue playing.
