How to Get My Yorkie Active

All dogs need frequent physical activity, and Yorkies are a relatively active breed. But just like humans, many dogs fall into the habit of sleeping constantly or lying around. This may be due to illness such as an underactive thyroid, old age or a lazy routine. If your dog seems too sedentary, start an active lifestyle routine with daily walks and play times.

Take your Yorkie on daily walks. Dogs need frequent mental and physical stimulation. Walk your dog for at least 30 minutes, twice or more a day. Use a leash, especially where there's a lot of people and busy roads. While not always required, keeping your little Yorkie on a leash will keep him safer.

    • 2

Play fetch with your Yorkie. Use balls that feature toys or food on the inside. This encourages your dog to fetch the ball and figure out how to get the prize inside. Keep these toys handy so your dog can play with them alone, as well.

    • 3

Get your dog excited about playing outside and inside. Start a daily play routine. Set aside time for nothing but playing with your Yorkie. Run around the yard with your dog or play chase in open areas inside. Play at the same time everyday.

    • 4

Show your dog enthusiasm when it's play or walking time. Get your dog excited by acting enthusiastic yourself. When your dog knows you are happy and excited, it will follow suit.

    • 5

Take your Yorkie to places such as lakes or wooded areas. New areas give dogs more interesting places to roam. New scents encourage it to explore.

    • 6

Visit dog parks. Let your Yorkie play with other dog there. Not only do dog parks encourage activity, but they also encourage socialization.
