How to Train Springer Spaniels

The springer spaniel is a medium-sized dog 19 to 20 inches high and weighing 40 to 50 lbs. The springer spaniel was originally bred to flush out game and return it to the hunter. These dogs love to learn, and as a working dog, they aren't as difficult to train as some breeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your springer for a long walk before beginning any training session. Springers are high strung and very energetic. If they can burn off excess energy before training sessions, they will be more focused and easier to train.

    • 2

Maintain a calm and assertive attitude when training your dog. Springers are intuitive dogs and will sense if you are tense. If you are tense, the dog will be tense. If you are calm and relaxed, the dog will remain relaxed.

    • 3

Issue instructions consistently in your training. A lack of consistency will confuse the dog. "No" should mean "no."

    • 4

Reward your springer with treats when it performs what you want it to do. Only give treats when it does what you ask.
