Things You'll Need
- Treats
- Potty-training pads
Instructions
Start training your puppy early by having its living areas, food and water bowls, crate and training pads set up before it comes in your home. This will allow the puppy to recognize where to potty, sleep and have meals.
Be patient with your puppy when going through obedience and potty training. Shichons are intelligent and fairly easy to train, but they need time to readjust to being in your home and learning what is the right way to behave.
Use dog treats for obedience training by rewarding your puppy when it does something well, such as learning a new trick, sitting when asked or other commands. Rather than punishing your puppy for misbehaving, reward it for good behavior.
Use dog training pads to potty train your shichon puppy. Pad training works well for this breed of dog by keeping the pads in one spot of your home, close to the area your dog spends much of its time. Remember that young puppies may have accidents because they cannot hold their bladders for long. Keep the pads near the door to get your puppy used to the idea of going outside.
Take your shichon puppy outside to go potty at least every few hours. This will help get the puppy familiar with the spots where it should be emptying its bladder. You want to take your puppy out after waking up in the morning or after a nap, within 30 minutes of eating or drinking, after playing, and before bedtime.
