How to Discipline a Rhodesian Ridgeback

Bred to hunt lions and other big game from Africa, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large breed of dog. Although these dogs are powerful, they are gentle and good-natured. Because Rhodesian Ridgebacks are eager to please, they are easy to train; Rhodesian Ridgebacks view training as a game and are eager to participate. A well-trained Rhodesian Ridgeback is a loyal, protective friend; an untrained one is a possible risk due to its size and strength. Disciplining Rhodesian Ridgebacks correctly ensures they are well trained and respect your authority as the pack leader.

Instructions

Stop your Rhodesian Ridgeback immediately when he performs a bad behavior. Pull on the dog's leash once sharply to get its attention. If the dog is off a leash, say no or make a sharp noise in a firm voice. Never yell at a Rhodesian Ridgeback; they are sensitive dogs.

    • 2

Stand over your Rhodesian Ridgeback if the behavior continues with your shoulders back and head high; this shows your dog you are dominant. Tell your dog to lie down, using a verbal or motion command.

    • 3

Push your Rhodesian Ridgeback on to its side on the ground while crouching over it if it still refuses to sit. Hold it down until it relaxes under your hands; this shows your Rhodesian Ridgeback that you are the pack leader.

Keep a leash on your Rhodesian Ridgeback at all times if bad behavior is constant. Pull up once sharply on the leash to correct your dog when bad behavior begins; over time your Rhodesian Ridgeback will learn which behaviors are appropriate and the leash will no longer be necessary.
