How to Train a Rhodesian Ridgeback to Stop Stealing Food

Rhodesian ridgebacks are rambunctious rascals. Many sneak up beside you when you are cooking or eating and try to snatch your food. Training when they are still puppies is the best way to get them to behave. However, techniques are available for you to curb older ridgebacks' behavior.

Instructions

    • 1

Place food on the counter. Hide behind a wall or a door with a long-squirt spray bottle.

    • 2

Spray your dog when it jumps up to get the food. Ensure your dog doesn't see you when this happens so the pooch thinks the counter sprayed it with the water.

    • 3

Place food on a counter on another occasion. Make a clicking sound with the dog clicker every time the dog looks at the food. It will look at you and the sound. When the animal looks away from the food and at you, give it a treat.

Take the food away from the ridgeback to ensure the dog doesn't get the food. Continue to do this for 15 minutes. Repeat the process for several days. The dog will then know not to take the food when you are present.
