How to Train a Doberman Pinscher to Stay

Many people think of Doberman Pinschers as being vicious dogs whose bark is as bad as their bite. However, when it comes to dogs, the level of effort on the part of the owner is what shapes the dog's personality and temperament. With positive reinforcement, and diligent training, your Doberman pinscher will become a trustworthy, loving family dog who listens to your commands. When training your dog, start with a basic command such as "sit" and "stay" and work your way up to more complex commands.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask your dog to sit down in a low trafficked area in your home where there are few distractions. Provide your Doberman with a treat when he exhibits the correct behavior.

    • 2

Flatten your palm and position it in front of the dog's face saying "Wait" or "Stay" in a firm voice. You can choose whatever hand signal or verbal command you want but be consistent and use the same commands each time.

    • 3

Slowly move backwards from the dog and see what he does. If the dog moves from the position, have him sit again and then repeat the process.

    • 4

Continue the process of asking the dog to "stay" until he doesn't move from the spot. When he listens to the command, praise him gently so you don't excite him too much. Offer him a treat and repeat the process until he understands the verbal and hand signals.

Practice this command regularly, moving to more interesting locations such as outside, or locations where there are more distractions. Over time, your dog will associate the hand commands and verbal commands and stay put in a variety of situations.
