How to Train a Neapolitan Mastiff

The Neapolitan mastiff is a large species of dog that can sometimes be intimidating because of its fierce appearance. However, they are mild-tempered, affectionate family dogs. The skin on the Neapolitan mastiff hangs loosely on their face and body. They have short fur of various colors such as gray, black, mahogany and tawny. They can be overly protective of their owners, but with training they will learn how to socialize with visitors as well as other pets.

Instructions

Use crate training to housebreak your Neapolitan mastiff. Crate training provides a secure, quiet place to stay in the home. It also teaches them not to soil their sleeping area. Place your dog in a crate that is large enough for them to stand up and move around in. Place the crate in an area of the house where he will be close to you and the rest of the family.

Take your Neapolitan mastiff for regular walks such as in the mornings, after each feeding and right before his bedtime. Regular walks will help to prevent boredom and provide an opportunity for your dog to urinate and defecate outside.

    • 3

Teach your Neapolitan mastiff basic commands such as "sit," "stay" or "come." Command your dog in a firm, clear voice. Repeat the commands until your dog responds. Reward your dog with a treat, praises or a belly rub whenever he or she responds to a command.

Take frequent breaks when training your dog. Training sessions should be at least 15 minutes at a time. Use different commands throughout the training sessions to keep it fun and exciting for both you and your dog.
