How to Housebreak a Border Collie

The border collie is an intelligent, lively dog used in many parts of the world to herd sheep. Border collies can be boisterous and you may find it a challenge to house-train it, but remember that it is a notably trainable breed. However, you need to start as soon as possible. You may find it easier to train a puppy than a dog, but consistency and patience are of the essence. You,the owner, must put the time and effort into training your border collie to ensure it is properly housebroken.

Instructions

    • 1

Exercise your border collie every day. Border collies need a large amount of exercise so unless you can provide it, this is not the best dog for you.

    • 2

Establish a routine with your dog. Feed it at regular times. Always take the dog out for toilet purposes after eating and take it out frequently at other times, including after waking and before sleeping.

    • 3

Take your dog to a particular place outside each time. Use a particular word or phrase, such as "go toilet." Exercise patience and wait until the dog obeys. Repeat the phrase "go toilet," adding the phrase "good dog."

    • 4

Confine your border collie to a particular place and protect your floor with plastic paper and newspaper. Do not allow your dog to move around your house until it is house-trained.
