How to Introduce a Pit Bull Puppy to Cats

You just brought home a Pit Bull puppy. The puppy is sweet, good-natured and intelligent. However, you must now introduce the puppy into your home and to your cats. Many people believe that Pit Bulls are extremely aggressive, violent and not suited for households with cats or other dogs. Pit Bulls are loyal and sweet with the proper training, and have no trouble living harmoniously with other animals. The key to successfully owning cats and a Pit Bull puppy is to introduce them properly and allow each animal to grow accustomed to one another.

Instructions

    • 1
Make your cats comfortable with your new puppy.

Place the cats in another room. Shut the door or put up a baby gate. Place food, water and a litter box in the room. Keep a person with the cats.

    • 2

Put the puppy on a leash. Ensure that the leash is long enough to allow the puppy to walk around and grow accustomed to your home. Allow the puppy to walk around the house. Keep the puppy away from the room with the cats.

    • 3

Take the puppy outside to use the bathroom and run around. This wears the puppy out to ensure they do not become over excited when introducing it to the cats.

    • 4

Bring the puppy inside to the living room or other large room of the house. Provide the puppy with a treat.

    • 5
Introduce your cats one at a time.

Introduce the first cat. Once the puppy is settled down, have the person in the room with the cats bring out one cat. Shorten the puppies leash in case of hostility between the animals. Set the cat down and allow the cat to smell around the room and near the puppy.

    • 6

Distract the puppy by petting it and providing a few treats. Watch the body language of each animal. Ensure that the cat is not hostile toward the puppy. Watch the puppy for any aggressive behavior.

    • 7

Keep the puppy distracted. Act as though the cat is not a big deal. After a few minutes, provide the cat with a treat and place it back in the room with the other cats.

    • 8

Bring out each cat one at a time. Allow each cat to sniff around the puppy, and grow accustomed to the new animal. After all the cats are introduced to the puppy, determine whether or not the cats are ready to roam freely with the puppy around.

Closely supervise all the animals. Ensure that the animals are completely comfortable with one another before leaving them alone together.
