DIY Jump Cups

Jumps are used for dog-related sports, such as obedience and agility. Puppies and older dogs are usually trained using bars positioned low on the jump uprights, while competition-ready dogs in their prime of life are trained using jumps at or about their shoulder level. "Snap on" adjustable jump cups that slide up and down the uprights make training easier for people who own several dogs and who cannot afford to purchase commercial jumps with permanent jump cup strips attached.

Instructions

  1. Cutting PVC Jump Cups

    • 1

Select PVC cups of the same size as the jump uprights that will be used. Use one cup per pair of uprights per bar that you use.

    • 2

Lay the "T" on its side, the vertical post of the "T" facing you and the horizontal bar flat on a solid surface. Draw a line dividing the vertical post in half so that the two "L" shapes are formed.

    • 3

Draw a line along the "back" of the horizontal bar of the "T."

    • 4

Cut along both lines. The two remaining "L" shapes should have concave surfaces.

    Alternate Method

    • 5

Purchase one snap saddle per upright per bar that you will use.

    • 6

Cut one section of PVC pipe per snap saddle. Each section should be two inches long.

    • 7

Mark each PVC pipe section 3/4-inch from one end.

    • 8

Cut each pipe section along the marked line. According to the Lucky Dog Sports page, you should stop cutting when slightly more than halfway through the pipe.

    • 9

Make one 1-1/4-inch cut along the length of the pipe. The cut should extend from the outside edge of the pipe to one end of the previous cut.

    • 10

Repeat the process on the opposite side of the pipe.

    • 11

Fit the circular end of the cut PVC around the saddle, making certain that it will be level when the bar is placed on top. Glue the PVC into position.
