How to Make Rope Tethers

A tether is a length of rope that is used by some dog owners to limit the range in which the dog travels. Used both indoors and out, a tether allows movement by the dog while limiting its range. Tethers are available for purchase from pet, hardware and big box stores. However, some pet owners prefer to make their own custom tethers based on available space.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a length of rope to use as a tether. Choose a length that will allow the desired range of motion for a dog when tethered. Cut the rope with a knife.

    • 2

Attach a swivel snap to one end of the rope with a Figure 8 Follow Through knot. Form the knot by first tying a Figure 8 knot in one end of the line.

    • 3

Tie the Figure 8 knot by turning the rope back across itself to form a loop 12 inches from the end of the rope. Insert the free end of the rope through the loop to form a loose Figure 8 knot.

    • 4

Feed the free end of the rope through the attachment hole of a swivel snap. Pull the rope through the snap. Guide the rope through the Figure 8 knot to form a double Figure 8. Pull the knot tight.

    • 5

Attach a second swivel snap in the opposite end of the rope tether with another Figure 8 Follow Through knot.
