How to Make a Dog Unafraid of Fireworks

Just like humans, dogs can experience overwhelming anxiety that can affect their quality of life, and many develop anxiety over loud fireworks displays. Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent your dog from overhearing fireworks---even if you move into a secluded area your dog can still detect the noise from fireworks. Fireworks are such a common fear among dogs that you can purchase items, such as CDs and pressure wraps, specifically designed for the purpose of curing your pet's fear. With a bit of patience and effort you can help your dog overcome his anxiety of fireworks.

Instructions

    • 1

Play a recording of a fireworks display for the dog on a low volume, and gradually increase the volume of the recording over a period of a week or so. Eventually the dog becomes accustomed to the noises so in the event of a real fireworks display he will not become anxious.

    • 2

Stay home with your pet during a fireworks display and offer him treats and verbal encouragement when he exhibits calm behavior.

    • 3

Wrap your pet in a snug pressure therapy vest that presses on the dog's pressure points or an old towel or shirt. This helps calm the dog because it gives him a swaddled, secure feeling.

Visit your veterinarian and discuss the possibility of giving your pet anti-anxiety medication. When other means fail to cure your dog his fears, your vet can prescribe medication that you can administer to your anxious pet when there is a fireworks display. Because fireworks are a rare occurrence, the dog does not require regular medication.
