Things You'll Need
- Recording of fireworks
- Treats
- Pressure therapy dog vest, towel, or T-shirt
- Medication
Instructions
Play a recording of a fireworks display for the dog on a low volume, and gradually increase the volume of the recording over a period of a week or so. Eventually the dog becomes accustomed to the noises so in the event of a real fireworks display he will not become anxious.
Stay home with your pet during a fireworks display and offer him treats and verbal encouragement when he exhibits calm behavior.
Wrap your pet in a snug pressure therapy vest that presses on the dog's pressure points or an old towel or shirt. This helps calm the dog because it gives him a swaddled, secure feeling.
Visit your veterinarian and discuss the possibility of giving your pet anti-anxiety medication. When other means fail to cure your dog his fears, your vet can prescribe medication that you can administer to your anxious pet when there is a fireworks display. Because fireworks are a rare occurrence, the dog does not require regular medication.
