My Dog Is Eating My House: How to Stop Him?

Getting a dog can be one of the great joys of life. However, your joy can turn into a nightmare when your dog starts destroying your possessions, especially those of great value. Chewing comes naturally to puppies, and even adult dogs will chew most if stressed. Thankfully, there are ways to prevent chewing and redirect your dog's behavior to what is more appropriate.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove as many small objects as possible and place them out of reach of your dog. Put away children's toys, remote controls, shoes and clothing. Having these items within reach is too great a temptation for the dog.

    • 2

Take away any unacceptable objects the dog is chewing and replace them with something appropriate for the dog to chew. If the dog is chewing a large object, move it away from the object then give it something acceptable to chew on. Kongs, Nylabones, and rawhides are good alternatives. Keep a variety of chews and toys to keep the dog occupied and prevent boredom.

Use deterrents like bitter apple sprays. When the dog tries to chew a forbidden object it will be so repulsed by the taste that it won't try to chew on that item again.
