Instructions
Teach your puppy commands. Basic commands are an integral part of puppy training and earning the necessary respect. Teach your dog standard commands from "sit" to "no." After your puppy follows your command as you instructed, enthusiastically praise it. Also consider sometimes providing your puppy a tasty treat as a reward for a job well done.
Always be consistent. Inconsistency can be detrimental for people trying to train puppies and get respect. Always place the exact same praise or consequences on a puppy so as not to confuse it. Provide your puppy with stability and help it learn by maintaining stable and predictable ground rules -- all of the time.
Do not pay attention to any negative behaviors. To earn your puppy's respect, make it understand that bad behavior is not going to get positive attention, or any attention at all, for that matter. If your puppy barks, cries or whines excessively, refrain from showing a reaction. A reaction is oftentimes exactly what a puppy craves. On the other hand, provide your puppy with a positive reaction and attention when it is relaxed, calm and on its best behavior.
Avoid eating at the same time as your puppy. In dog packs, Alpha dogs are the ones who generally get to indulge first. If you feed your puppy before it gets a chance to see you eat first, it sends the notion that it is the leader and head of the household. Instead, eat your meal first and encourage your puppy to wait and watch you patiently and calmly.
Nip biting in the bud immediately. Biting is definitely a puppy habit that any owner needs to eliminate as soon as possible. Never wait on training your puppy to stop biting. The longer that you permit aggressive and sometimes even painful biting to take place, the more difficult it will be to stop it permanently. Firmly reprimand your puppy the first time it tries to bite someone. For example, place your hand on its head, look it in the eye directly and say clearly, "No."
Show control. Playing around with your puppy is a beneficial way to provide it with exercise while also bonding and establishing a strong connection with it. To get the respect of your dog, always be the one to initiate the beginning and the end of the playing session, however. These actions display the fact that you are the one in control, not your puppy.
How to Get Your Puppy to Respect You
As cute and adorable as newborn puppies are, without training they can come across as absolute bundles of mischief and misbehavior. When training a brand new puppy, one of the most important concepts is training it to provide you with the appropriate respect. Training a puppy can be tough, from going through commands such as "sit" and "stay" to housebreaking. To properly and effectively train a young puppy, it is absolutely crucial first to attain a level of respect.
