How to Stop Chihuahuas From Licking People

The dog's tongue is very versatile. It uses its tongue for tasting, exploring, greeting new people and dogs, expressing submissiveness and showing affection. While it can be cute to receive little licks from a Chihuahua, persistent licking can become irritating. Like any other problem behavior, the owner can train his Chihuahua to stop this habit by first finding out the cause. Chihuahuas that develop obsessive licking behaviors are likely suffering from a lack of mental stimulation or loneliness, but they could just be overly affectionate.

Instructions

  1. Obsessive Licking Due to Boredom

    • 1

Spend more time with your Chihuahua during the day, or leave it with someone who can look after it. If the licking lessens, it is likely your Chihuahua was suffering from loneliness.

    • 2

Wake up earlier in the morning to take your Chihuahua for a walk before you leave. Tire it out so it is less bored during the day.

    • 3

Increase the amount of exercise you give your Chihuahua daily. Most dogs require about 30 to 60 minutes a day.

    • 4

Spend more time playing with, grooming and training your Chihuahua. it will appreciate the attention and benefit from the extra activity.

    • 5

Buy your Chihuahua chew toys and bones. This will keep it occupied for long periods, and give it something to do other than licking people.

    Overaffectionate Licking

    • 6

Retract your affection from your Chihuahua when it licks you. Move or turn away from the dog.

    • 7

Look away from your dog. Command it to stop by saying, sharply, "No" or "No licking." Be consistent by using the same commands each time.

    • 8

Inform other people of your training, so they don't allow your dog to lick them.
