How Do I Teach My Puppy to Take Food Gently?

Puppies get excited about many things, not the least of which is food. So it's not surprising that in their enthusiasm they may nip your fingers when you give them a treat. Of course, this is not socially acceptable behavior for the well mannered puppy you are raising. Teaching your pet not to take a bite of your finger when being offered food from your hand is not difficult. As with all dog training, consistency and repetition is key for the puppy to learn new skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin your practice session in a quiet place where there are no distractions. It is important for the puppy to focus all of its attention on you. Tell your pet to sit and praise him when he obeys.

    • 2

Place a food treat in the palm of your hand, closing your fist loosely around it. Offer the back of your hand, allowing the puppy to sniff.

    • 3

Say "Easy" in a calm voice. If the puppy becomes overly enthusiastic and tries to take the treat, immediately remove your hand, saying "No."

    • 4

Offer the back of your closed hand again. When the puppy is calm, open your hand and allow it to accept the treat from your palm.

    • 5

Continue repeating these steps until your puppy routinely takes the treat from your palm without nipping. Every time the puppy successfully completes the task, praise it lavishly.
