How Can I Stop My Male Yorkie From Crying for My Female Yorkie?

Dogs are social animals and most enjoy the company of other dogs. If you have a male and female Yorkie, they will most likely be good companions for one another and can be kept together all the time. However, if there is an occasion when you cannot keep them together, they may miss one another, and will bark or cry for each other. Fortunately, there are ways to manage your dogs and distract your male from crying for his female friend.

Instructions

    • 1

Neuter or spay one or both of your Yorkies. All male dogs have a natural instinct to mate with available female dogs. If your female Yorkie is not spayed, it is possible she is in heat; if your male Yorkie is also unaltered, he will cry for your female and try to get to her. You will have a difficult time trying to stop him from crying for her until her heat cycle is over.

    • 2

Place your male Yorkie with your female if she is not in her heat cycle and the two of them get along with one another. If the male has access to the female, he will not need to cry for her.

    • 3

Provide physical exercise for your male Yorkie by taking him for a walk, throwing a toy, going to a dog park or doggie daycare, or any other physical activity he likes. A tired male Yorkie is less likely to cry for his female companion.

    • 4

Provide mental stimulation for your male Yorkie by giving him puzzle toys, treat-dispensing toys, chew toys or having an obedience training session with him. This will keep his mind occupied and will drain some of his energy, which will deter him from crying for your female Yorkie.

    • 5

Give treats and praise to your male Yorkie any time he is being quiet and not crying for the female. Do this along with saying a command such as "quiet" to reinforce his silence.

    • 6

Put an anti-bark dog collar on your male Yorkie. This special type of training collar uses a static charge or a harmless scented spray to correct your Yorkie when he begins to cry.

    • 7

Take your female Yorkie to another location, such as a veterinarian's office, a dog boarding facility or a friend's home if there is a medical or behavioral reason you can not place the two dogs together (such as the female being in heat or the two Yorkies not getting along with each other).
