Instructions
Hold the treat in front of the dog's nose. Bring the treat up and back over the dog's eyes. but do not say "sit." When the dog sits, give the treat and lots of praise.
Grasp the collar under the chin with one hand and hold a treat above the dog's nose with the other hand. While gently pulling upward on collar, pull treat back over dog's head. Say "sit" when dog sits and give treat. Be sure to give lots of praise for successful sit. Practice this until dog sits without much pulling on the collar.
Do not touch the collar. Hold the treat over dog's head. Say command "sit" and give treat when dog sits. If the dog does not respond to the command, continue to work with the dog according to Step 2 until he can perform the trick without handling.
Ask the dog to sit without the treat in front of him. Praise him when he performs the task. Try giving him a treat for every third time he performs the task and eventually taper off until he is performing the task for the command only.
Take the dog somewhere new and distracting and start the process all over again. Work with the dog until he can sit without treat lure in anyplace at anytime.
