How to Use a Top Paw Snap-on Collar

While it may look like more like a medieval torture device than a collar, the Top Paw Snap-on collar is an effective training tool. Pinch collars, such as the Top Paw Snap-on, are made of interlocking metal links that apply pressure around the dog's neck when the leash is tightened. A pinch collar is a tool recommended for experienced owners, and should only be used under the guidance of a professional trainer.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of the dog's neck with a flexible measuring tape. Position the tape near the base of the ears and measure all the way around the dog's neck.

    • 2

Purchase the right size Top Paw Snap-on collar for your dog. Top Paw collars come in 14-inch, 18-inch, 20-inch and 22-inch lengths, so select a size that is just larger than your dog's neck. A German shepherd with a 19-inch neck needs a 20-inch collar.

    • 3

Press in on the snap near the top of the collar to unbuckle it and secure the collar around the dog's neck with the prongs facing in. If the collar slips out of position at the base of the ears, shorten it by removing links from the middle of the collar until it stays in place.

    • 4

Turn the collar so the snap is positioned on the right side of the neck and attach a 6-foot training leash to the collar's ring. The Top Paw Snap-on Collar has two sets of rings; one that sits on the neck between the prongs and one near the snap, known as the live ring. The leash must be attached to the live ring in order for the collar to function properly.

Position the dog on your left side and ask it to walk forward with you. If the dog walks calmly by your side, praise it with a treat. If the dog ignores you and charges forward, repeat the "walk" command followed with a firm tug on the leash. This causes the metal on the collar to make a distinct sound and the prongs to tighten around the neck, encouraging the dog to mind. Praise the dog lavishly as soon as he responds to your command. Repeat with any command the dog is having difficulty understanding.

Unbuckle the Top Paw Snap-on collar and remove it from the dog's neck at the end of your training session. An unattended dog in a pinch collar is in danger of becoming entangled and injuring itself.
