How to Build Dog Barriers Yourself

"Man's best friend" may also be a nuisance at times, and you may need to keep your pet in a specific location. This is where a dog barrier is needed. Although there are commercial dog barriers on the market, you can easily make one yourself. A homemade dog barrier is more effective because it is custom-built to fit the space where it is required.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 heavy-duty hook and eye sets
  • 1"-by-2" wood planks
  • Wire mesh
  • 4 flat angle brackets
  • Tape measure
  • Nails, assorted
  • Hammer
  • Saw
  • A hand or electric drill

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of the space where the dog barrier is to be built.

    • 2

Cut the wood planks into four pieces. Two of the pieces should correspond to the height of the dog barrier and two to the width.

    • 3

Join the pieces of wood together using nails to create a rectangular frame. Add a flat angle bracket to each corner to make the frame stronger. The frame should loosely fit into the space from which the dog is to be barred.

    • 4

Measure the wire mesh and cut it to the size of the dog barrier's rectangular frame. You may need to add a few inches to provide for folding and hooking of the wire mesh.

    • 5

Hook the wire mesh onto the frame and hammer it into place with small nails.

    • 6

Screw the eye hooks into the four sides of the dog barrier. Hold up the barrier where it will be installed and mark where the eye hooks will touch the wall.

    • 7

Drill small holes into the wall where the eye hooks will fit. Screw the hooks into these holes in the wall.

    • 8

Install the dog barrier by hooking the hook into the eyes on the left, right, top and bottom. Note that the dog barrier will not swing, and this will make the animal feel safe.
