How to Make a Dog Stay in the Bed

It is important that your dog understands a few basic commands such as "sit" and "stay" to keep its mind active and obedient. Dogs are intelligent creatures and respond to the mental stimulation of being trained. Teaching your dog to stay on its bed and follow other commands also lets it know you are the pack leader. Teaching your dog to stay is one of the most useful commands too incorporate.

Instructions

    • 1

Send your dog to its bed before giving it food or a treat. If your dog does not understand the command then guide it there using a leash or by placing the treat in front of its nose and walking toward the bed.

    • 2

Play with your dog while it is sitting on its bed so it associates positive experience with being on the bed. Feed your dog while it is on the bed to increase the happy feelings it has toward it.

    • 3

Allocate 10 to 15 minutes a day to training your dog to stay on the bed. Any more than that and your dog may lose concentration which frustrates you, making the process take longer.

    • 4

Place your dog on the bed as before. Issue the command "stay" and begin to walk away. If the dog moves off the bed, put it back and try it again. Make sure the command is stated loudly and clearly.

    • 5

Reposition the dog on the bed every time it moves away. Keep doing this over and over again until the 15 minutes are up. Don't give the dog a treat unless it does as you have asked and stays on the bed. Continue this daily training until your dog understands the command and follows it.
