Instructions

    • 1

Give your pit bull plenty of exercise every day. This energetic breed should get at least two walks per day, each about 30 minutes long. Spend time playing tug or fetch with your pit bull to exercise him and give him the human interaction he desires. If your dog is extra-energetic, sign him up for canine sport training, such as disc dog or weight pull.

    • 2

Provide various appropriate toys, bones and chews for your pit bull to chew on. Purchase different tastes and textures to keep your pit bull interested and occupied.

    • 3

Interrupt your pit bull with a loud noise, such as a clap or a whistle, whenever you catch him chewing on the couch (or anything else you don't want destroyed). Then say, "Leave it!" As the training progresses, gradually stop using the noise to interrupt your pit bull's chewing, relying solely on the command.

    • 4

Reward your pit bull for turning his attention from the couch to you. Praise, pet, and treat him.

    • 5

Offer your pit bull a replacement: a toy, chew or bone instead of the couch for chewing. Praise him in an excited and happy voice when he takes the replacement object.

    • 6

Repeat steps three through five until your pit bull learns what he is allowed to chew on and what objects are off-limits. Be consistent. Every time you catch your pit bull chewing on the couch: clap, command, reward, and replace.

Spray bitter apple spray on your couch for insurance against chewing. Dogs dislike the taste of this spray, available at your local pet store.
