How to Teach a Puggle to Shake Hands

Puggles are a breed of dog produced by mating a pug and a beagle. These designer dogs provide a balance between the pug and beagle breeds, resulting in a friendly, intelligent dog that is willing to learn new tricks, such as how to shake hands. Puggles tend to be very treat motivated, which makes them easier to train than some dogs --- they will do almost anything for a tasty treat.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask the dog to sit down. If your puggle does not know how to sit on command, you must first teach him how to sit before he will be able to complete the shake hands trick.

    • 2

Grab the dog's paw that you want to shake, shake it gently and then immediately offer the dog a treat. Use lots of praise as you give the dog a treat. Puggles are very affectionate dogs and will react well to your verbal encouragement.

    • 3

Continue the process of shaking the dog's paw and treating the dog after each shake. When you grab the paw, use a verbal command such as "Shake" so the dog learns a verbal cue.

    • 4

Say the verbal cue and hold out your hand. After enough repetition, the puggle will understand that you want him to place his paw in your hand when you use the "Shake" command. Treat your dog immediately after he offers you the paw.

    • 5

Practice the trick until the puggle gives you his paw each time you offer your hand or use the verbal command.
