Collar and Leash
-
Most training begins with the dog on a short leash, usually 6 feet long. Your dog should have a nylon or cotton collar for everyday use. Some dogs require a little more restraint than others, so you may also need a choke collar or prong collar to teach your dog basic commands.
Treats
-
Treats are a great way to reward your dog in the beginning stages of obedience training. Treats should be small and only given if a command is obeyed. Dog treats are available at grocery stores, pet stores and through online distributors.
Clicker
-
Clicker training is another method for training dogs. The clicker is a small, handheld device that you "click" when the dog does something right. At first, give the dog a treat as you click. Eventually phase out the treats and only use the clicker.
Whistle
-
Dog whistles are an option for training dogs to come to you from long distances. Loud, emergency whistles are available at most camp and survival stores. Dog whistles, which sound at frequencies humans can't hear, are available at pet stores.
