Instructions
Stare Test
Place a leash on the dog and secure the leash to a fixed post or have another person hold on to it. Get the dog's attention by snapping, clapping or calling the dog' name.
Stare directly into the dog's eyes. If the dog stands up straight and still with its ears and tail up, it may be trying to display dominance.
Look away immediately and move from the dog to calm it down, if it begins to approach you. The dog may be be beginning an attack.
Physical Sensitivity Test
Attach a leash to the dog and make sure it is calm and away from any distractions, like people.
Pull the skin on the dog's shoulders gently. If the dog growls or quickly pulls away, stop.
Repeat this with the skin on the dogs rear end, then gently grab hold of the tail. Notice any reaction from the dog. If it is growling or tries to defend itself, it may be expressing aggressive behavior, and the dog may be a hazard to children and visitors.
Food Test
Attach a leash to the dog and bring it near its food bowl. This test is best done at meal time.
Fill the dog's bowl and place it just out of reach of the dog. Either reach for the bowl or have someone else move near it.
Observe the dog's reaction. If it starts growling or barking at you or at the other person, it may be aggressive. In any case, undo the leash and allow the dog to eat its food.
