How to Make Your Dog Howl & Roll Over

Once you have completed basic obedience training with your dog, including simple commands, such as "sit", "stay" and "down," you can then begin to train your dog to do tricks. Tricks like howling and rolling over on command can be taught using positive reinforcement. When training your dog to carry out these tricks, be patient and consistent with the training as some dogs learn faster than others. This is particularly important when training your dog to howl on command, as some dogs do not howl as much as others.

Instructions

  1. Roll Over

    • 1

Take your dog to a quiet area where she won't be distracted. Choose a place, such as a grassy or carpeted area, with a ground surface that will not hurt her back when she rolls.

    • 2

Sit in front of your dog and give the "Down" command while holding a treat in front of her nose.

    • 3

Slowly move the treat back towards the dog's shoulder and across her back while encouraging her to follow it with her nose. Reward the dog if she succeeds in completing the roll by giving her the treat and lots of praise.

    • 4
      Roll over!

Repeat Step 3 several times; finally, introduce the command, "Roll over" as your dog carries out the action.

    Howl

    • 5

Find out what noises trigger howling in your dog and use these to encourage this behavior.

    • 6

Say the word "Howl" as soon as she begins to vocalize; reward her with a treat and lots of praise. Trigger the behavior regularly and give the command until she understands that the command itself means that she should howl.

    • 7

Teach your dog to stop howling by saying, "Quiet," after she howls, then reward her when she does.
