Advice on Crate Training a Puppy

A well-behaved, house-trained puppy is every pet-owner's dream. Training your puppy, however, can be challenging. Dogs need rules and guidance about what is proper behavior, and giving your puppy free rein of the house can make training difficult. Confining your puppy to a smaller space can help you monitor him and will provide him with personal space. When used properly, crate-training can help you house-train your puppy effectively and humanely.

Instructions

Choose a crate that is the appropriate size: large enough inside for your puppy to stand up or turn around. Crates that are too large give your your dog room to eliminate: generally, dogs don't like to eliminate where they sleep. Crates that are too small are uncomfortable. Get the appropriate-sized crate to prevent soiling and ensure comfort for your puppy.

Make the crate enjoyable for your puppy. Teach your puppy to go in by putting treats or toys inside until he is comfortable with the idea of a crate. Encourage your puppy with positive reinforcement by praising and rewarding him.

    • 3

Put a comfortable bedding or soft plush towel in the crate. If your dog enjoys lying in plush surfaces, putting one in the kennel will encourage your puppy to lie in it.

    • 4

Place the crate in a central location, preferably close to where you are going to be, and put a play fence around the crate. The play fence will accustom your puppy to a reduced space and prepare him for the crate. Keep the fence up for several days.

    • 5

Expend your puppy's energy, especially if it is the puppy's first night in the crate. He will be tired and more likely to sleep in the crate for a longer time.

    • 6

Take care of your puppy's bathroom needs before putting him in the crate. Puppies need to eliminate often, so take him out frequently to avoid accidents inside the crate.

    • 7

Put only a calm and submissive puppy in the crate, luring him in with treats or toys. Make sure you praise him and then give him another treat before you close the crate. Do this every time you leave the house for longer periods or when you retire at night.
