How to Train a Ridgeback Dog

Although the Rhodesian Ridgeback was initially bred to hunt lions, this breed is very intelligent, loving and gentle. With proper training, your pet can become a great companion and excellent guardian of your family. Ridgebacks should begin training as puppies at 12 weeks old. Use lots of encouragement, praise and rewards when training your dog.

Place the lightweight collar on your puppy during mealtime or playtime, which will serve as a distraction. The puppy may try to take the collar off by scratching it off or rolling around, but do not take it off at this time. Wait till your puppy forgets about the collar, then take it off later.

Attach the leash to the collar around your puppy's neck and supervise while the dog drags the leash around the house and gets used to it. Once your puppy has forgotten about it, pick up the other end of the leash. Now is the time to take advantage of your puppy wanting to follow you everywhere. Praise your puppy with kind words and petting when it follows you on the leash. When your puppy strains against the leash, stop immediately and call your puppy. Do not yank on the leash.

Teach your puppy basic commands. Start by teaching it to sit. When you notice your puppy in the act of sitting or about to sit down, verbally call out the command "sit" in a firm and clear tone. As soon as your puppy sits, praise and pet it. Be consistent and always reward your puppy when it sits on command. You can use this same form of command instruction when your puppy lies down, eats and so forth. Just change the command to your pet's appropriate position.

Exercise your puppy often by taking him/her for daily walks. Start by walking a block and gradually lengthen the walk.
