How to Teach a 4-Month-Old Beagle Puppy Its Name

Naming a puppy is a very important part of dog ownership, especially the energetic beagle puppy, bred to chase prey. Most dog trainers suggest it's easier for that breed to be trained when puppies are younger than 6 months old. The breed is also known for wanting to please, so a 4-month-old puppy should learn its name fairly easily and quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a name for the puppy. Short names with a distinct syllable sound, like Max or Red, will be easier for him to recognize and distinguish from other words and commands. Beagles need to become familiar with their name right away so you can move on to other training like sitting and lying down.

Put him on a leash so you can control him. Sit several feet from him. Attract his attention and verbally coax him to come to you. Give the leash a slight tug if he doesn't respond.

    • 3

Say his new name in a happy voice as he comes your way. When he reaches you, say "Max, good boy!" Give him a treat and pet him. Repeat several times.

Repeat the steps over the next several days, without the leash, from various distances and even from different rooms. Praise him, pet him and give him a treat while saying his name each time he obeys.

    • 5

Move outdoors and practice, but always in a fenced area until he obeys nine out of ten times. Only then should you test him out of the yard.
