Research the size of crate you will need. Never purchase a crate the dog will be able to walk around in. Many owners think this will be more comfortable for the dog, but it may cause problems, such as the dog eliminating in the crate. The dog should be able to turn around and lie down in the crate. If your dog will grow to a much larger size, purchase a crate with a divider so you can increase the space later.
Determine which type of crate you want to purchase. There are two types, plastic and wire. Plastic crates generally are to be used when you travel with your pet. They are lightweight and usually have a handle. Metal crates are stationary, but can be folded for easy storage. Metal crates allow the dog to have more viewing area than plastic crates.
Look at the materials used to make the crate, and ensure they are safe for your pet. Make sure the crate is sturdy and can handle lots of wear and tear from the dog, including chewing.
How to Select a Dog Crate
Selecting the proper crate will be beneficial to both you and your dog. Dogs are den animals and naturally want to be in a safe, secure place of their own. A crate can be used when you are not able to supervise the dog. This is especially helpful when you are house-training a puppy.
