How to Potty Train an Applehead Chihuahua That Is Two Months Old

Applehead Chihuahuas get their name because their heads are broader on top and thinner at the jaw line, giving the head a shape similar to an apple with an indent on the top, called a molera. Applehead Chihuahuas are only about 6 lbs. at maturity if the dog is not overweight. Because of the size of the dog and its inability to keep warm in colder temperatures, indoor potty pad training is ideal.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a potty puppy pad in each room of the house where the dog will have free run. Do so to start the potty training in case the dog cannot make it to a designated puppy pad far away.

    • 2

Place the puppy on the potty pad and tell it to go potty. The puppy pads have a smell that attracts the dog to the scent. If the dog doesn't need to go, let it leave the pad, but every 15 minutes, place the dog back on the pad and tell it to go potty. When the dog goes potty, give it plenty of praise.

    • 3

Pick up the dog and place it on the potty pad if it has an accident somewhere it shouldn't. Don't yell or scold the dog if you didn't catch it doing wrong. Just pick up the dog and take it to the pad and tell it what to do. If you catch the dog doing wrong, tell the dog "No" and pick it up and place it on the puppy pad while telling it to go potty.

Continue this training until the Chihuahua starts going to the potty pad itself. Once the dog knows where you want it to go, you can start removing puppy pads in other rooms. Remove one puppy pad every week. When you remove a pad, take the dog to the next closest puppy pad and point to the pad and say, "Go potty." Eventually, you will be down to one or two potty pads, depending on how many you want in the home.

Keep refreshing the puppy pad with a clean pad after the dog uses it or when it goes one or two times on the same pad.
