How to Get My Dog to Like the Gentle Leader

The Gentle Leader is a head collar manufactured by Premier Pets that is designed as a training tool to prevent your dog from pulling on the leash. It may take some time for your dog to adjust the the Gentle Leader collar, because many dogs instinctively try to remove the straps from their face. However, with the proper training and guidance, your pet will eventually grow accustomed to the Gentle Leader.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the Gentle Leader on your dog when it is in a relaxed state. Give it a treat. Remove the Gentle Leader collar immediately. The key is to associate wearing the head collar with positive reinforcement. Do not attempt to walk your dog until it becomes acclimated to the collar.

    • 2

Gradually increase the amount of time that your dog wears the collar before giving it a treat. If the dog appears comfortable, increase the time one or two minutes every couple of days.

    • 3

Put the Gentle Leader on before meals. Repeat until your dog has associated the head collar with eating.

    • 4

Attach the leash to the Gentle Leader and take your dog for short walks in the house. Some dogs will try to remove the head collar immediately. Use a gentle tug on the leash to distract your dog and redirect his attention to you. Remember that very little force is required with the Gentle Leader.

    • 5

Gradually lengthen the distance of the walks. Keep your dog at your side, and do not keep tension on the leash.

    • 6

Periodically reward good behavior on walks with small treats or praise.
