How to Keep Your Dog Out of Chairs

When you bring a new dog home, you may be tempted to sit right down on a chair with the dog in your lap. This is a risky thing to do if you don't intend for the dog to sit on the furniture as they please. If you want to keep your dog out of chairs, it's important to establish boundaries right away and be consistent. If you have an existing dog that is used to sitting on the furniture, but you have new chairs in the home, there are ways to keep your dog out of them that only require time, patience and some creativity.

Instructions

    • 1

Upend the cushions on chairs before you leave the dog alone in the house. If the dog cannot make itself comfortable on the chair, it will not camp out there.

    • 2

Place sheets of aluminum foil on the seats of the chairs. When the dog jumps up on a chair, the foil will make a crinkling sound and won't stop making it until the dog vacates the chair. Dogs tend to shy away from areas where ongoing noise is present.

    • 3

Place cardboard boxes on the seats of the chairs. The boxes deter dogs from climbing onto chairs as they have trouble maneuvering around them to find a comfortable space.

    • 4

Drape a carpet runner upside down on the chair. The backing on the runner is generally made of a sticky type material that the dog will find uncomfortable to place its paws on, let alone try to lie on and relax.

Block off rooms in your home with child safety gates if it is feasible. If you can block the entryways to the rooms in your home easily, this is a worthwhile and simple option to implement.
