How to Indoor Potty Train Puppies

Potty training your puppy, in the vast majority of cases, is not an overly difficult task. This is because young puppies are so receptive to training and eager to learn new things. However, if you live in an apartment or need to leave your puppy for more than four hours at a time, it might be best to indoor potty train the puppy, which can come with its own set of unique challenges to deal with.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an ideal spot for your puppy to be potty trained in the house. This spot should not be near where your puppy eats and sleeps, but it should be easy to get to. Generally, you need a space of about 3 or 4 square feet.

    • 2

Add an indoor training pad to the space. These training pads are made for potty training puppies indoors. Once your puppy gets the hang of it, you can replace the larger training pad with a slightly smaller one.

    • 3

Bring your puppy to the training pad after naps and meals or after you notice that your puppy has been drinking water. You should also bring your puppy to the pad in the morning. These are the times of day when your puppy is most likely to be using the potty.

    • 4

Give your puppy a command for using the training pad. Something like "Go ahead" or "Do your business" are fine.

    • 5

Praise your puppy with love and attention and give a little treat after using the training pad. This will encourage your puppy to continue to do so.
