Training for Puppies

After getting a new puppy, one of the first lessons you will need to teach your new pet is the proper place to urinate and relieve his bowels. This process is called "housebreaking." This will make life easier for you because your pet will know the rules for housebreaking. One of the most popular and effective methods of housebreaking your puppy is crate training. There are few guidelines to follow when training your puppy with this method.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a crate that is the proper size for your dog's breed.

    • 2

Put your puppy in the crate only when you are able to watch him and during the night while you are sleeping. Bring your puppy outside to relieve himself once an hour, if possible. Use a leash to bring your puppy outside if the area is not fenced. Designate a spot for your puppy to relieve himself. It is important to bring your puppy to this spot each time so he knows this is the place to relieve himself.

    • 3

Allow a few minutes for your puppy to relieve himself. If he doesn't do it, then place him back into the crate. If he does relieve himself, give him positive reinforcement such as a treat and plenty of verbal praise. Bring your puppy back indoors and allow him to run around. Put your puppy back in the crate after a few minutes of free time and continue with the hourly toilet breaks.

    • 4

Watch for a pattern forming with the times your puppy does relieve himself. Setting a daily feeding time for your puppy will help with setting a toilet pattern.

    • 5

Begin scheduled toilet breaks once your puppy has established a routine. Your puppy should only be in the crate for one hour prior to the scheduled toilet break to avoid an accident in the house.

    • 6

Stop putting your puppy in the crate for housebreaking purposes after he learns that when you take him outside it means he is going to relieve himself.
