Things You'll Need
- Puppy treats
- A lead
Instructions
Spend time each day on training your puppy. Focus on getting it to recognize the sound of its own name. According to MacVets, a website supported by veterinary surgeons, a surprising number of adult dogs do not recognize their names. This may be because the name is usually used in the middle of a lot of other words. Use your dog's name, without adding anything else. When the pup responds by looking at you, praise it or give it a treat.
Give the puppy plenty exercise, getting it used to being taken out on the lead. Establish a routine that includes appropriate feeding and toileting. A puppy needs to urinate frequently, particularly after waking, after drinking and when it is excited. Take it outdoors to the chosen area, every hour when it is very young. Use a command, such as "toilet," and praise it when it responds correctly. Be prepared for the occasional accident and do not get angry with the puppy.
Teach the puppy to follow a few basic commands, such as "sit," "come" and "toilet." Use repetition praise and treats. It is better to have short, intense training sessions rather than trying to hold the puppy's attention for too long. Socialize your puppy by letting it be in the company of other dogs, with supervision. You could decide to take it to dog obedience training classes if you are not confident about your training techniques.
