How to Use a Dog Training E-Collar

E-collar training uses an electric shock as a positive punishment for your dog. A dog's poor behaviors can cease with e-collar training. Positive punishment is when the dog believes the correction of his behavior through an electric shock is not caused by the handler. Negative punishment is when the dog ignores the handler's positive punishment and the handler continues to shock the dog excessively. It is important to not let the dog learn that the electric shock and the collar are linked.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the batteries in the transmitter to make sure the collar is working properly.

    • 2

Set the electric shock level at the lowest setting. You can adjust higher as necessary. If your dog does not respond to lower voltage settings, it becomes necessary to increase the voltage.

    • 3

Speak a command to your dog. If the dog does not respond, then press the button giving the dog an electric shock. Repeat the command. If the dog does not respond, give an electric shock at the same time you speak the command. Repeat this process until your dog responds correctly to your command. You want the dog to connect your voice to the electric shock.

Give your dog a treat when the response to your command is appropriate. Rewards for following commands keep the dog interested and the training session is positive.

    • 5

Pet your dog after appropriate responses to your commands. Positive reinforcement will help the dog to respond positively in the future.
