How to Potty Train Adult Dogs Without a Crate

When an adult dog moves into a new home, the stress of being in a new environment can cause it to have accidents. A dog takes time to adjust to a new schedule and may stop making messes in the house when it gets used to its new surroundings. However, your new adult dog may never have had any house training at all. In addition, it may not be used to a crate and you may have to potty train your dog without one.

Put your dog in the yard frequently. If your dog goes outside every two or three hours, it will have a chance to relieve itself. Let it outside about a half hour after meals as well, when it is likely to have to potty.

    • 2

Interrupt your dog if you catch it having an accident in the house. A sharp, yelled word, such as "No," is effective. You also can clap, snap your fingers or even clear your throat. Use any noise that will get your dog's attention.

Take your dog outside to a designated potty spot. Encourage it to finish its business in that spot. Use words such as "go potty" or "do your business." This will signal to your dog that it hasn't been brought outside to play.

Reward your dog for relieving itself in the yard. Praise it with phrases such as "good potty" or "good potty outside." Specific praise helps your dog learn what it did correctly. Give your adult dog treats for going potty outside as well.
