How to Stop a Dog From Howling at Fire Engines

Training a dog can be a difficult procedure, requiring patience, consistency and caring over a long period to teach the dog the type of behavior you expect. Stopping your dog from howling or barking at passing fire engines might seem like an impossible proposition, but it can be done in several weeks.

Instructions

    • 1

Command your dog to sit and stay each time a fire engine is passing by.

    • 2

Reinforce the desired behavior by saying "No" if the dog barks, howls or shows indications he is about to. Do not yell, as your dog may think you're howling too.

    • 3

Reward the dog immediately if she remains silent while the fire engine passes. Give verbal praise, attention or a special treat.

    • 4

Continue to reinforce the desired behavior (silence) and correct unwanted behavior (barking or howling) until your dog learns what you expect.
