How to Train a Cairn Puppy

The Cairn, also known as the Cairn terrier, is a breed that was originally bred in the Scottish highlands and on the Isle of Skye. Cairn puppies are known to be independent, inquisitive and intelligent. As an intelligent breed, Cairn puppies are quick to learn. You should start training your puppy as soon as you get him home, so that he knows the rules, although you should take it slowly at first.

Instructions

    • 1

Teach your puppy to go to the bathroom outside. House breaking your Cairn puppy is one of the most important aspects of dog training, and should be tackled right away. Take your puppy into the garden on a collar and leash often so that he will learn where it is acceptable to go. Praise your puppy or give treats when he gets it right.

    • 2

Repeat commands to your Cairn puppy so he learns these words and their meanings. You should teach basic commands such as "off," "down," "sit," "stay" and "leave." Reward your puppy for obeying these commands, you can praise him, give treats or play with a favorite toy.

    • 3

Make your training sessions short and often. Puppies have a short attention span, so you should train your Cairn puppy for no more than 10 minutes at a time at first.

    • 4

Finish your training sessions on a positive note. Make sure you wait until your puppy has obeyed your command correctly before you stop training, otherwise both you and your puppy will remember the negative point and be discouraged. Give him something easy to achieve at the end of training.

Play games to help your puppy learn. Cairn terriers were originally a working breed and they love to be active and useful. Playing fetch or getting your puppy to find an item you've hidden, will help train your dog but will also keep her active and engaged.
