Instructions
Get your dog to lay on its side. If it knows the "play dead" trick, that's the easiest way of getting it into this position. If it doesn't know "play dead," you can wait until the dog lies down on its own.
Get the dog used to having its feet, legs and belly touched. Be careful, since Dalmatians have a tendency to get aggressive when they're afraid. Carefully rubbing the feet, legs and belly will get the dog used to the handling it will take to get it to roll over. While touching the dog, give positive verbal reinforcement as well as a treat. Once you get the dog used to this treatment, you can proceed to the "roll over" trick.
Say "roll over" in a clear voice while you carefully take hold of the front and back leg on the floor and roll the dog over. This might frighten the Dalmatian at first, so be careful of bites or scratches.
Give praise and a treat when you successfully roll the dog over. Dalmatians respond well to positive reinforcement, so it's crucial to let the dog know when it has done a good job.
Repeat the assisted "roll over" trick in this manner until the dog does it on its own. Dalmatians have an excellent memory, so it shouldn't take long for it to make the connection between the phrase "roll over" and the associated trick.
How to Train a Dalmatian to Roll Over
Dalmatians are smart dogs that are often eager to please their owners, which makes them an ideal breed when it comes to training. In addition to basic commands such as "sit" or "stay," you might want to teach your Dalmatian fun tricks like "roll over." Since many dogs don't like lying on their backs, this trick can make a Dalmatian a little nervous. With practice, patience and plenty of positive reinforcement, your Dalmatian can learn this trick in no time.
