How to Get a Poodle to Go Potty in the Rain & Cold

Poodles of all sizes have distinct personalities. They have a tendency to have a regal attitude and can sometimes be difficult to train, especially when they have an aversion to an activity, such as going to the bathroom in the rain or snow. Learning to work with these intelligent dogs is the key to getting them to do as they are expected consistently and without too much struggle.

Instructions

Establish why your poodle has an issue with the rain and cold. Is it more susceptible to these issues after being groomed, leading you to believe it is an actual issue with physically being cold, or is it more of an attitude issue with not wanting to be outside in the bad weather?

If the dog is cold, try a dog sweater or raincoat to protect it from the elements. You can also try training them to stand under your umbrella.

    • 3

If the dog has an attitude issue with the rain and cold, train them to accept that environment. Poodles are highly intelligent and are easy to train.

    • 4

Always take the dog outside yourself instead of expecting them to go out by themselves. Try playing games with them in the rain such as tug-of-war or fetch with a ball. Taking their favorite toys out may convince them the rain isn't so bad.

Reward the dog with treats anytime it goes out in the rain to begin with, and reserve treats for only when your dog goes potty.
