How to Make Grain-Free & Soy-Free Treats for Dogs

Most dogs can digest treats with wheat, corn or soy products as prominent ingredients. But some dogs, because of food allergies or weight issues, cannot or should not eat commercially prepared or homemade dog biscuits. This can limit an owner's options when it comes to rewarding a dog during training sessions or just treating their pet after a long satisfying walk. You can make dog treats that are free of grain and soy products that are easy and good for your dog.

Instructions

Cut up some cheese. Dogs love cheese, especially cheese with a strong flavor like cheddar. Take a knife and cut some cheddar cheese into 1/4 inch cubes for a small dog, larger cubes for the gentle giant breed in your life. Stored in an airtight container or sealable bag in the refrigerator, these treats will stay fresh for weeks.

Cook some hot dogs. Look for hot dogs with no wheat or soy filler, just pure beef. Slice the thawed hot dogs into 1/4-inch-thick slices, place on a piece of paper towel to absorb the juices and cook in your microwave until hard. If you cannot find hot dogs that are 100 percent meat, cut up some roast beef cubes and cook until hard. These treats will also stay fresh in the refrigerator if sealed in a bag or container.

Freeze some goodies. Some dogs just love ice cubes. If the idea of a chunk of frozen water makes your dog jump for joy, make the ice extra special by using beef stock instead of water. Fill an ice cube tray with homemade or store brand beef stock and freeze. Mark the "special" ice cube tray with a freezer container marker so your family doesn't accidentally put those cubes in their soft drink.

Share a treat with your dog. After that long walk, sit down at the table and cut up an apple or slice some lengths of celery stalk. Apply a generous amount of peanut butter and share -- one piece for you, the next piece for your best friend. You'll both love this special grain-free treat.
