How to Be the Alpha Male in Dog Training

Dogs are highly social pack animals that love to be around others. In the wild, dogs are born into a group that contains both an alpha male and an alpha female, which quickly subordinate new additions to the pack by holding them to the ground until they understand their roles. Newcomers then act submissively to the leaders, and do not challenge their authority. To successfully train your dog, it is essential to position yourself in the role of the alpha male, to avoid behavior problems and ensure you are in control.

Maintain eye contact with your dog. In pack situations, alpha dogs will use eye contact to assert their dominance. When performing any exercise, training or disciplining your dog, be sure to keep eye contact with him.

    • 2

Sit on the floor or a chair with your puppy. Hold him directly in front of you until you make eye contact. If he struggles, growl in a low register. Hold him in this position for 15 to 45 seconds. Repeat this exercise in various locations.

Hold your puppy in your arm so he is lying on his back. Maintain eye contact, and hold the position until the dog relaxes. Once he has relaxed into subordination, release him. If your puppy is too large to hold, perform this exercise with the dog lying on the floor.

Making your dog sit before activities asserts your dominant role.

Teach your dog to sit. Make him sit down before any activity, including leaving a room, taking a walk or receiving a treat in order to ensure the dog understands and recognizes your authority.

Isolate your dog in his crate after giving a stern negative reprimand, such as "no" for any challenge to your authority, such as snapping at you, running from you or any other act of aggression. If a dog succeeds in challenging you, you will lose your authority, and behavior problems will increase. If you address these issues immediately, they will not become a habit.
