How to Get Dogs to Stop Barking With Sounds

While there are many options when it comes to training your dog, sound can be a good aversive or positive signal for the dog. For barking dogs, it is best to train them using your voice and a disruptive noise, although sound-emitting collars are available at most pet retail stores.

Instructions

  1. Voice and Sound Aversion

    • 1

Wait until your dog starts barking to begin the training.

    • 2

Tell the dog to "quiet" when it is barking. Only say "quiet" a few times and after a couple barks so that the dog can eventually connect the two actions.

    • 3

Shake the can (or use any other noise-making object) so that the dog is startled and stops barking.

    • 4

Continue this process until your dog listens to your "quiet" command.

    Bark Control Collars

    • 5

Talk to your veterinarian before you purchase an ultra-sonic collar for your dog. Make sure the vet approves of this training device.

    • 6

Follow the collar manufacturer's instructions on battery usage and turning the collar on and off. Turn the collar on.

    • 7

Place the collar around your dog's neck as you would a normal collar. Remove the control collar before the dog rests for the night.
